About The Black Hills

Mt. Rushmore

Every summer bikers flock to the Black Hills of South Dakota for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and ambitious hikers work their way to the top of Harney Peak, the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. The region is an idyllic vacation home location, with strong tourism activity to support additional commercial development.


Getting There

Attractions are located throughout the Northern and Southern Hills, and a vehicle is recommended to get around. Rapid City, the second largest city in South Dakota, is the region's main commercial airport.

The Shrine of Democracy was completed in 1941, and draws countless visitors every year to see the famous faces. Located 23 miles southwest of Rapid City, sculptor Gutzon Borglum's monument is open year-round.

Jewel Cave

The second-longest cave in the world, Jewel Cave National Monument features more than 150 miles of explored passageways. Take a cave tour to view glittering crystal chambers up close.

Deadwood

Take a step back in time to the days of Wild Bill Hickok in the Old West town of Deadwood. See the original Dead Man's Hand in person, or head to one of the downtown casinos to try your own luck at the tables.

Custer State Park

The 71,000 acre Custer State Park offers camping, hiking, fishing, scenic drives, and up-close views of buffalo herds and other wildlife.
